Brainstorming

As the starting point of the project, brainstorming is essential to the design process.

In A1.1 Choosing a Topic Project, the group started individually, and brainstormed large topics for problems. While brainstorming, the team considered technical problems, health problems, and safety problems. Our initial large topics were:

  • School safety • Pediatric injuries • Opioid addiction • Memory loss-like Alzheimer’s • Water crisis •

  • Physical challenges • Lifestyle aid • Safety • Health • Accessibility to basic needs •

  • Volleyball • Cars • Wrestling • Portable Toilets • Deodorant • Safety • Security • Cleanliness • Recycling •

From these ideas, the team decided on 16 specific ideas to discuss in depth

  1. Safety in schools

    1. Something to be put in classrooms to protect from school shooters.

  2. Security

    1. A box to attach underneath the car to leave keys in, open with a code.

  3. Cleanliness of wheelchairs

    1. A device to clean wheelchair wheels when they get debris in them.

  4. Clothing for the homeless

    1. Find a way to create a few articles of clothing that could be worn for all four seasons

  5. Poor shoes cause health issues

    1. shoes actually keep your feet from getting stronger and adapting to the world, they contribute to weakness in the lower extremities

    2. poor or ill-fitting shoes can cause mental, emotional, and physical pains

  6. Healing time is frustrating for those with injuries

    1. foot/leg injuries

    2. Hand injuries

  7. The elderly have trouble walking by themselves

    1. Have one product that a person can use for longer for canes and walkers

  8. Volleyball knee pads

    1. They become smelly, get flattened quickly, and hold bacteria and reopens wounds

  9. Sleeping in cars

    1. Uncomfortable and can lead to aches and strains, and cannot fit more than one person

  10. Portable toilets for van life

    1. Currently they use buckets or the outdoors

      1. Compostable toilets require the most specific pH to be clean and without odor

  11. Student safety

    1. Children are being shot

    2. Many highly-used areas in the school are not sanitary and can more easily spread illness

  12. Pediatric injuries

    1. Infants often die of suffocation while sleeping

      1. Research shows this is probably not manageable, SIDS unknown cause and what is suspected is not feasible for us

    2. Many young children accidentally consume poisonous items (things like Windex don’t have the safety cap like pill bottles or mouthwash do)

  13. Opioid addiction

    1. A significant amount of people are becoming addicted to opioids due to prescriptions (get prescribed opioids and then need more and more) (think of weekend at New Haven)

    2. Many people who use opioids overdose (die or Narcan)

  14. Memory loss

    1. Older people experiencing issues with memory loss may wander off and forget where they are, how they got there/how to get back, or where they live

      1. Possible solution: trigger device

  15. Water crisis

    1. People have to spend time walking many hours to fetch water

    2. The water is not always clean due to human and animal waste

    3. Limited way to filter/clean large amounts of water at once

  16. Go Baby Go

    1. Find a way for the program to reach more children and improve the process of building the cars
