Competition

Competition is inevitable, yet acts as a valuable resource to learn from. Identifying what people are currently doing to solve the problem gives the designers a better idea of the problem as well as ideas to avoid because of repetition and/or because ideas are patented. Designers can see what issues other products may be creating and utilize that information to make sure the new product does not cause the same issue. Studying the competition allows the product to be more thoroughly researched and forces both enhanced design and product performance.

The major competitors currently in the marketplace are the solutions that wheelchair users use to avoid and clean dirty wheelchair wheels.

ASMO Inc.’s goal is to create a product that will sell directly to the user rather than to a hospital or distributor, and the goal is to produce a better solution for a lower price. Wheelchair users should not have to buy two wheelchairs simply because one is difficult to clean.

Basic remedies include using two wheelchairs—one for indoor use, one for outdoor use—and using simple cleaning supplies and a rag to clean the wheels. Other solutions come from companies that specifically develop solutions to problems that wheelchair users face, including dirty wheels.
