Initial Problem Statements

Go Baby Go!

Mary

(1) Most electric cars for children have the pedals on the floor out of reach of children who are short or have amputated limbs. Changing the pedal to a button on the steering wheel can make it accessible top them.

(2) Independence can be achieved with a camera on the front of the car to relay a video feed to a worrying parent.

(3) Children with disabilities gain independence due to the work that GoBabyGo lends to them.

Sydney

(4) In the United States, children with mobility disabilities spend 89% less time engaging in physical activity than healthy children. The lack of physical activity has negative physiological effects (Oregon State University, 2016).

(5) In the United States children with mobility disabilities can go through physical therapy to help with cognitive development, but it is more effective when it is fun using Go Baby Go! cars. With a larger program that could last longer, more children can have access to their resources (Oregon State University, 2017).

(6) In the United States, the only option for children with mobility disabilities for self-directed mobility is a power wheelchair which starts at $25,000. The self-directed mobility provided with the Go Baby Go! program is a much more affordable option which can also aid in physical therapy (University of Delaware, 2016).

(7) Average toddler spends about an hour of direct interaction with peers, a toddler with mobile disabilities spends between 6 and 20 minutes in similar interactions.

(8) Gobabygo programs are mainly done in one or two days, each producing around 9 cars. With an extended club or program more children could be helped.

(9) Pediatric wheelchairs can cost from 150-1500 dollars. Childrens ride ons can cost as littles as $59.87  for a power ride on. This could enable children to play with peers without the expense of a power wheelchair and the threat of it getting damaged.

(10) In the United States, toddlers with disabilities affecting mobility spent less than 20 minutes in direct play interactions with their peers, much less than the hour a typically-developing toddler spends. A lack of independent mobility results in fewer social interactions, slowing down cognitive, social, motor, language, and other developmental benefits in young children (Pediatric Physical Therapy, 2016).

(11) In the United States, the cost of therapy for families with toddlers with disabilities and whether or not it is covered by insurance varies greatly. While exploration and stimulation are crucial to a child’s growth, many families cannot afford expensive treatments (University of Delaware, 2015).

(12) In the United States, most major insurers will not cover expensive devices such as power wheelchairs for children with disabilities affecting mobility until they are at least two years old. Denial of assistive devices in such a crucial point in a child’s development may result in severe delays in learning (Popular Mechanics, 2016).

Cleanliness of Wheelchair Wheels

Mary

(13) In the US, over 3 million people over the age of 15 that are confined to wheelchairs use them indoors and outdoors and are burdened with the difficult task of cleaning them.

(14) In developed countries more than 95% of people who require a wheelchair have access to one, that means 5% of people that need one barely have access to one, let alone one for inside and out.

(15) In a study with 119 wheelchair users, depression or anxiety is found due to the related stress of their disability.

Sydney

(16) In the United States 3.6 million people use wheelchairs and the only way to clean its wheels are by using a cloth or a mit, although most people confined to wheelchairs cannot do this themselves (Disabled World, 2018).

(17) In the United States people who have wheelchairs need to take proper care of them otherwise the expensive equipment they rely on could fail them (Wheelin’ Mobility, 2018).

(18) In the United States people with wheelchairs need to have their wheels cleaned daily to avoid getting dirt and other weather elements on them, although cleaning wheels is not convenient for only one person to do by themselves (Karma Healthcare, 2017)/

Olivia

(19) 3.3 million people use wheelchairs, they all use them both inside and outside and have to deal with the hassle of cleaning their wheels.

(20) Around 100 million people worldwide need a wheelchair but cannot afford one, if people cannot even afford a single wheelchair how can they be expected to have two, one for outside and one for inside.

(21) Between 240,000 and 337,000 people with SCI live in the US as of 2015 with 12,500 new cases occur each year. They cannot clean their wheels on their own and must rely on others.

(22) In the United States, the number of wheelchair users increases by 2 million each year, and that number is predicted to increase in the coming years. Despite the growth, both manual and power wheelchair users have difficulty keeping their tires clean (Pants Up Easy, 2016).

(23) In the United States, the price of manual and power wheelchairs has a range from one hundred to thousands of dollars. Despite the expense that not all 3.6 million American wheelchair users could easily afford, a commonly suggested solution to dirty wheelchair wheels is purchasing an additional wheelchair-one for indoor use, one for outdoor use (Pants Up Easy, 2016).

(24) There are over 3 million wheelchair users in the United States, nearly all of whom move between the indoors and outdoors. Often after going outside, wheelchair users track in dirt or slush, which they themselves are typically unable to clean (Pants Up Easy, 2016).

School Safety

Mary

(25) In the years since Columbine, there have been 10 school shootings where more than 5 people have been killed, none of which used any type of protection against them.

(26) In cases of study where alternative methods of hiding from a school shooter were implemented in tests, the shooter mostly gives up at the slightest interference in their plan.

(27) In the years since 1970, there have been over 1300 school shootings with 2018 having the highest since 1970.

Sydney

(28) In the United States there have been 57 times as many school shootings as other developed countries within the past nine years, something is needed to protect students in their classrooms (CNN 2018)/

(29) In the United States, gun violence in schools has become too much, so it needs to be stopped at the source: public health. With better public health and a more active school health system, there would be a reduction in school gun violence (NPR 2018).

(30) In the United States, the rise in school shootings has lead to the need for plans to hide during active shootings, although hiding is not currently the best option. If children are supposed to hide in active situations, there needs to be a more effective way (ABCNews 2018).

Olivia

(31) 1,897 mass shootings have occurred since Sandy Hook. A total of 2,123 have been killed and 7,991 have been wounded.

(32) 21 weeks into 2018 there had been 23 school shootings where someone has been hurt or killed. That averages to more than 1 per week.

(33) Out of 1,257 school shootings since 1970, 588 of them occurred inside the school building.

(34) In the United States, 3 million children are witnesses to gun violence, leaving them with severe issues such as anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, or engagement in drug abuse (Everytown, 2018).

(35) In the United States, there have been at least 239 school shootings since Sandy Hook. Over 400 students and teachers have been shot, many of whom have died due to their injuries (Gun Violence Archive, 2018).

(36) By May 2018, there were 23 school shootings in just 21 weeks in the United States, the deadliest of which occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February, killing 17 (CNN, 2018).
